In a continuation of what I have written previously, I noticed out of today’s top 10 in Ping.Sg, two (1) (2) of them are about how they have finally decided to leave Nuffnang. I supposed this is where there difference between Malaysian bloggers and Singaporean bloggers.
Singaporean bloggers are more skeptics and more realists about things. Even the $1 administrative fees for cashing out irks them. The fact that they are getting very few ads campaigns compounds their uneasiness further. Limetouch even talked about how one of the ads campaign, the Durex ad campaign plays an annoying sound in the background. The comments on the posts further agree with the author.
Contrast that with Malaysian bloggers (who recently got a major ego boost when they felt they were part of the group that gave the Barisan government a whipping) that will think they are right in everything they post or support. When sisuahlai wrote an interesting (interesting doesn’t mean factually right) which actually poses good and provoking thoughts, readers would comment on how she could get herself out of the scheme. Factually she was only suggesting if the distribution of income is fair. And even then, she does not know if 30% was really what Nuffnang is taking. It shows how in general the blogosphere in Malaysia tends to have this herd mentality (ie. not thinking out of the box) and die die follow what trendy blogger says or do. (evidently this is true, just take a look at how many posts are there on J. Co donuts and Jogoya posts) Nevermind if they have never cash out of their Nuffnang ads, but they will still support it like it is actually their parents we are talking about.
Actually, I am lazy. But let me give some hints to the investigative bloggers out there, as well as giving a chance to Nuffnang (if they wanna manipulate their accounts), just go for a print out of Nuffnang financial report from SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) and then take a close look at their business operation. Revenue would comes from advertisers. Then look at their costs of goods sold, meaning you bloggers. Then you truly know how much you are getting. Being professional about most things, I got a feeling that bloggers receive less than 50% of what the advertisers are paying. Perhaps only the top rated bloggers get more than 50% while others will remain at the bottom of the food chain. So go, for those who truly want to be investigative. I won’t do it though coz I couldn’t be bothered. Nuffnang frankly has been more positive than negative for both side of the causeway as money will be a good inducement for people to blog more regularly and thus giving us a livelier blogosphere.
One last note, if Nuffnang Malaysia is doing so much better than Nuffnang Singapore, does it mean that one is working harder than the other? Personally I believe the internet power of both countries are relatively equal. Well, perhaps that would be another post in future.

malaysia got great wall?
lol.. it is an anology
Hmm… not reading ping.sg does make the whole impression very different from the petalingstreet.org….
“in general the blogosphere in Malaysia tends to have this herd mentality (ie. not thinking out of the box) and die die follow what trendy blogger says or do.”
alamak, a bit generalized right? Give our neighbours more credit laaa
why is everyone crazy about nuffnang? Is is easier to earn money from it than from adsense?
A bit of an unfounded generalization on the Malaysian blogger thing ya.
hey i written something on the fallacy on nuffnang
do read about it.
i do agree on the skeptical and realist part…
but i do not differentiate between nuffnang and advertlets
they are all the same
I don’t know how fair that SSM thing is though, so I’m going to call you in on it. As a businessman yourself, you would think there has to be adequate reward for the enormous risk and effort you put in. It’s not like they are rent-seekers like certain Malaysian politicians who want something for nothing. Someone should do a check on Google as well - I have a feeling they get an even higher profit margin. Other businesses we patronize frequently have even more insane profits. Do you know the average turnover for mamak restaurants (in KL at least) is RM1 million? You pay RM1.20 for a glass of limau ais that costs RM0.10 before indirect costs. That’s 1100% in gross profit. It’s just out of character for you to touch on this aspect of nitpicking on profit margin when we understand the ways of business ourselves.
If it’s anything like the media business, don’t be surprised if all bloggers are getting is less than 15% of the actual fee charged to advertisers.
I believe Nuffnang has problem getting more advertisers to sign up and they only serve graphic ads which most surfers are avoiding.
Actually if you go to SSM to get the records, you would be surprised to see who else are the shareholders and no wonder they go around defending nuffnang in the blogosphere.
Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
thanks all for your comments
“evidently this is true, just take a look at how many posts are there on J. Co donuts and Jogoya posts”
